Size a dry cooler in thirty seconds.

Enter the heat load and the temperatures. You get the rated capacity to look for, the flow, the approach and how many units it takes, scaled to our published rating point. Then send it to an engineer for the exact selection.

How the estimate works

  1. Your heat load is converted to MBH and the flow is worked out from the fluid's heat capacity and the temperature drop you asked for.
  2. The temperature difference between your fluid and the outdoor air is compared to the published rating point: fluid 104°F in, 95°F out, 77°F air. A smaller difference means more coil.
  3. Glycol carries less heat and transfers it less well than water, so the capacity is corrected for the fluid you picked.
  4. With adiabatic pre-cooling on, the air reaching the coil is taken 85% of the way from the dry bulb to the wet bulb.
  5. The result is split across the fewest units that fit the published range of 208 to 14,546 MBH per unit.

Questions engineers ask

How do you size a dry cooler?

Start from the heat load, the fluid and its glycol percentage, the temperature the fluid enters and must leave at, and the site design ambient. The gap between the leaving fluid and the outdoor air (the approach) sets how much coil you need. A tight approach needs far more surface than a wide one.

What is the rating point for KUHLWERX dry coolers?

Published capacities of 208 to 14,546 MBH per unit are rated with fluid entering at 104°F and leaving at 95°F in 77°F air. This tool scales your conditions back to that point, so the number it shows can be compared against the published range.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a planning estimate, typically within about 15% of a full selection. The exact model, fan count, sound and power come from the factory selection software, run at your conditions.

When do I need adiabatic pre-cooling?

When the design-day air is too close to, or warmer than, the leaving fluid temperature you need. Wetting a pad in front of the coil cools the air toward the wet-bulb temperature on the hottest hours, and the unit runs dry the rest of the year.
